This walk is designed to give a flavour of the setting for The Shadow of the Wind, and can be used as a starting point to explore more of the world of the novel, many of its locations and sceneries. We advise that you also use a proper guidebook to find your way about the streets, as this is purely an outline. Of course many of the places described in the novel, such as the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and the rambling Hospice of Santa Lucía, are inventions, but in wandering the streets of the Gothic quarter or strolling down the Ramblas, you might just catch a glimpse of the city in which Daniel and Fermín pursued their mysterious quarry, where Julián Carax first fell in love and Nuría Monfort met her fate, and perhaps hear the hollow laugh of Laín Coubert . . .
